NEW DELHI – India and Mauritius have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to boost cooperation in the energy sector, along with a long-term sales and purchase agreement between Indian Oil Corp. Ltd. and the State Trading Corp. of Mauritius for petroleum products to the maritime neighbour. Under the agreement, Indian Oil Corp. will supply Mauritius' entire imports of petrol, diesel, and aviation turbine fuel, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said Saturday.

 

"The five-year agreement between IOCL and STC (State Trading Corp.) is an assured long-term supply commitment to Mauritius, providing the country with security of supplies and shielding it from price volatility," the ministry said. This is the first long-term supply agreement concluded by an Indian state-owned oil marketing company outside South Asia in recent years, it added.

 

The agreement was signed during Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri's visit to Mauritius. "Today, as the world grapples with challenges like unstable energy supplies, India is providing its friendly nations with not just fuel, but the assurance of trust in supply and energy security," Puri said at an event in Port Louis Friday.

 

India has already met the petroleum demand of Nepal and Bhutan and supplies significant quantity to other countries in the region. Even during the ongoing war in West Asia, India fulfilled its supply commitments to Nepal and Bhutan, making it a dependable energy security provider for the region, the ministry said. "The agreement with Mauritius positions India as the country's anchor fuel supplier and strengthens India's strategic and economic footprint in the Indian Ocean region."

 

During Puri's visit to Mauritius over Thu-Fri, he also participated in IndianOil (Mauritius) Ltd.'s 27.5 thousand metric tonnes bunker marine fuel storage facility at Mer Rouge, the ministry said. Under the Memorandum of Understanding, the two countries also agreed on cooperation in biofuels through exchange of knowledge, research and training, it added.  End
