India Fri rainfall 54% below normal; season-to-date deficit at 13%, says IMD

MUMBAI – India recorded 3.5 millimetres of rainfall Friday, 54% below the normal of 7.6 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. During Jun. 1-Aug. 21, the country received 544.3 millimetres of precipitation, 13% below the normal of 627.4 millimetres.
All four homogenous regions in the country recorded below normal rainfall on Friday. East and northeast, northwest, and central registered "deficient" rainfall, while south India registered "large deficient" showers.
The east and northeast region of the country received 5.5 millimetres of rain, 49% below its normal of 10.9 millimetres. Northwest India received 2.6 millimetres of rain, 53% below normal from its normal of 5.6 millimetres. Central India received 52% below normal rainfall at 4.3 millimetres.
South peninsula India received 1.9 millimetres of showers, 66% below its normal rainfall of 5.7 millimetres. Nine out of the 10 subdivisions in the region recorded either "large deficient" or "deficient" rainfall except Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which received 30.7 millimetres of showers, which was 148% above normal.
Of the 36 sub-divisions in the country, rainfall received was "large deficient" in 22, "deficient" in six, and "normal" in three. Three sub-divisions of the country registered a "large excess" rainfall, while one registered "excess" showers. There was no rainfall in one sub-division, west Rajasthan, according to the data. End
