MUMBAI – With crude oil again nearing $100 per barrel, the pressure on Indian equities is seen rising. Fast-moving consmer goods companies are likely to face headwinds from rising crude prices, which will inadvertently result in a rise in the cost of raw materials. Moreover, a surge in sugar prices is likely to add to the negative sentiment for food and beverage companies in the sector. The Nifty FMCG index is likely to decline for the third straight week, according to analysts.
The government recently imposed curbs on sugar, preventing large consumers from stockpiling the sweetener. After permitting duty-free raw sugar imports to boost supplies, the government said sugar prices did not rally to record highs because the sweetener was diverted for ethanol production; prices rose due to lower-than-expected production and weather-related damage to the sugarcane crop.
The rise in sugar prices is despite the government's order late Wednesday mandating bulk consumers to hold inventories for not more than 15 days, in an attempt to prevent panic buying and hoarding of sugar during the festival season, according to an analyst at a top broking firm. The inventory holding limit applies only to large consumers such as confectioners, soft-drink manufacturers, and food processors, who buy more than 10 tonnes of sugar per month. Both factors are adversely affecting sentiment towards players in the food and beverages segment, he said.
The sectoral index ended Friday at 47510.95 points, down 352.30 points or 0.7%, the worst hit among sectoral indices. Barring United Spirits, all its constituents ended the week lower. Over the week, the Nifty FMCG fell more than 2%, against a 0.5?ll in the benchmark Nifty 50. The Nifty FMCG closed lower for the second week, as predicted by technical analysts last week.
"The Nifty FMCG index breached its three-month-long congestion zone to the downside," Vipin Kumar, assistant vice-president of research at Globe Capital Market, said. Going ahead, he expects the index to move with a negative bias and test 46000–45500 points in the near term. On the upside, he pegs resistance at 48600–48900 points.
