MUMBAI – The government has appointed former Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman Somanath Sreedhara Panicker as part-time, non-official director on the central board of the Reserve Bank of India for a period of four years, effective Thursday, the central bank said in a release. It also reappointed Anand Gopal Mahindra to the same role for a four-year term. 

 

Panicker served as ISRO chairman from January 2022 to January 2025 and led the organisation during the Chandrayaan-3 mission. He is currently the Vikram Sarabhai Distinguished Professor at ISRO, according to information available on ISRO's website. He has had a 40-year career linked to India's aerospace programme after receiving a masters degree in aerospace engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, and a doctorate from the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai. 

 

Meanwhile, Anand Mahindra is chairman of the Mahindra Group as well as automotive major Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd. and information technology company Tech Mahindra Ltd. He was first appointed as non-official director to the RBI's central board in 2022. The terms of Venu Srinivasan, Ravindra H. Dholakia and Pankaj Ramanbhai Patel, who were appointed with Mahindra as members of the RBI's central board, have ended.  End
