India gets 28% below normal rain Thu, deficit so far this season 13%, says IMD

MUMBAI – India recorded 5.8 millimetres of rainfall Thursday, 28?low the normal of 8.0 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. During Jun. 1–Aug. 20, the country received 540.8 millimetres of rain, 13?low the normal of 619.8 millimetres for the period.
Of the country's four homogeneous regions, east and north east India, central India and south India registered "deficient" rains Thursday, while northwest India received "normal" rains Thursday.
The east and northeast region received 37?low normal rainfall at 6.9 millimetres, and south India recorded 47% below normal rainfall at 3.2 millimetres. Meanwhile, central India received 27% below-normal rains at 7.2 millimetres and northwest India recorded 5.2 millimetres of rainfall, 10?low the normal.
On Thursday, Andaman & Nicobar Islands received the highest rainfall at 23.5 millimetres, followed by coastal Karnataka at 19.8 millimetres, according to the weather bureau's data.
Of the 36 sub-divisions in the country, rainfall was "large deficient" in 14, "deficient" in nine, "normal" in six, "large excess" in four, and "excess" in two. There was no rain in one sub-division, according to the data. End
