NEW DELHI – Union Home Minister Amit Shah urged the southern states to resolve pending water-related issues concerning them through joint meetings with the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Ministry of Home Affairs, and Inter-State Councils. At the 31st meeting of the Southern Zonal Council held in Tamil Nadu, the states agreed to resolve pending water disputes expeditiously through mutual dialogue and constructive solutions, a government release said.

 

The meeting was attended by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, Puducherry Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan, Andaman and Nicobar Islands Lieutenant Governor former Admiral D.K. Joshi, Lakshadweep Administrator Praful Patel, and the Deputy Chief Minister of Telangana Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu along with senior officers of the states and the Centre. At the meeting, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana also agreed to resolve issues related to division of assets and liabilities in consultation with the Centre.

 

Shah said the entire development journey of South India has been based on three pillars — high literacy rate, trained manpower and technical expertise in the utilisation of deep seas. "South India has always contributed in every sector. South India has played a very major role in all areas of the country's information technology, automobiles, pharmaceuticals and infrastructure development, and that is why a large amount of foreign direct investment has also come to the South," the release said.

 

The minister also highlighted the need for the Central government and all departments of all state governments to prepare a roadmap for a drug-free India. "Until all departments of the Central government and all departments of all state governments join this movement, we will not be able to save the coming generation from this evil," the release said.  End
