MUMBAI – India needs to develop mechanisms that allow both global and domestic funds to participate in its financial markets while ensuring that the country can better track and channel overseas capital, Amarjeet Singh, whole-time member, Securities and Exchange Board of India, said at a conference on Thursday.
"One of the things that we cannot track is the NRI money," Singh said, pointing to the growing financialisation of funds globally. Singh said India needs to take into account how financial products and market infrastructure are implemented to avoid creating an imbalance between domestic and global sources of capital. "We need to actually work on a mechanism where both India's...global funds, as well as domestic funds," can participate and help expand the market, he said.
Singh also called for greater development of exchange-traded funds and market-making mechanisms. Globally, a significant share of investment flows into index funds, and India should encourage market making when launching such products to ensure adequate liquidity, he said. "We should encourage market making, so that the products live there," the speaker said, adding that creating an active market would be important for the growth of such financial products.
Singh also highlighted the potential for developing new financial products linked to emerging areas of demand, including commercial property, rental assets and senior living. Reverse mortgages could also become more relevant as people seek to unlock the value of their homes later in life, he said. End
