Two SEBI whole-time members' current 3-year term gets over in next one month

MUMBAI - Securities and Exchange Board of India's Whole-Time Member Amarjeet Singh is not sure whether his current three-year term will be extended beyond Aug. 31. Responding to a question from Informist on the sidelines of a capital market conference in Mumbai Wednesday on market whispers of him getting an extension, Singh said he did not know.
The current three-year tenures of two whole-time members of SEBI, Singh and Kamlesh Chandra Varshney, get over in the next one month. Singh had taken charge as a whole-time member on Sept. 1, 2023. Varshney joined SEBI on Sept. 20, 2023. Prior to their appointments as whole-time members, Singh was an executive director in SEBI while Varshney was a joint secretary in the department of revenue of the central government.
Whole-time members of SEBI are appointed by the government. The tenure and other terms and conditions are decided on a case-to-case basis. In the last few years, the tenures of whole-time members have been of three years. Both Singh and Varshney's appointments were notified in The Gazette of India by the finance ministry on Aug. 16, 2023. Both were given tenures of three years.
A whole-time member can get an extension if the government so decides. The recommendation of SEBI's chairperson is taken into account by the government, apart from other factors. The extended tenure, too, is decided by the government. End
