India Wed rainfall 9% below normal; season-to-date deficit at 13%, says IMD

MUMBAI – India recorded 7.2 millimetres of rain Wednesday, 9% below the normal of 7.9 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. During Jun. 1–Aug. 19, the country received 535 millimetres of rain, 13% below the normal of 611.8 millimetres for the period.
Of the country's four homogeneous regions, central India and south India registered "deficient" rains Wednesday. While northwest India received "excess" rains, and east and north east India registered "normal" rains Wednesday.
The east and northeast region received 7% below normal rainfall at 9.6 millimetres, but central India recorded 23% below normal rainfall at 7.4 millimetres. Meanwhile, south India received 36% below-normal rains at 3.5 millimetres and northwest India recorded 8 millimetres of rainfall, 27% above the normal.
Wednesday, Himachal Pradesh and coastal Karnataka received the highest rainfall at 24.7 millimetres and 24.5 millimetres respectively, followed by east Madhya Pradesh at 23.3 millimetres, according to the weather bureau's data.
Of the 36 sub-divisions in the country, rainfall was "deficient" in 11, "large deficient" in nine, "excess" in three, "large excess" in five, and "normal" in seven. There was no rain in one sub-division, according to the data. End
