Nifty 50 at 3-week closing low as crude stays at $92/barrel

MUMBAI – The Nifty 50 index declined for the seventh straight session Wednesday as crude oil prices were steady at the higher level of $92 a barrel. The BSE Sensex closed lower for the fourth straight day. The 50-stock index, which settled slightly above 24000 points, was at an over-three-week closing low. The index has fallen over 2% in these seven sessions.
US President Donald Trump said no conversations are taking place or scheduled with Iran, while maintaining that the US naval blockade of Iranian ports remains in full force and mines in the Strait of Hormuz have been cleared, Al Jazeera reported. According to Abbas Araghchi, Iran's foreign minister, the US is now "begging" to negotiate on Iranian conditions after failing to force Tehran to surrender.
At the end of the continuous trading session on the exchanges at 1515 IST, the Nifty 50 was at 24048.55 points, down 0.4% from Tuesday. The BSE Sensex was at 76908.05 points, also down 0.4%. After the closing auction session, the Nifty 50 ended at 24078.30, down 76.60 points or 0.3%. The Sensex ended at 76909.68, down 325.78 points or 0.4%. India VIX, the volatility index, was down 0.6% at 11.3225 points.
Most of the broader market indices also settled lower, with the Nifty Smallcap 250, down almost 1%, falling the most. The Nifty Midcap 50 was the only gainer among them, up marginally from Tuesday. Among sectoral indices, the Nifty IT recovered from its three-day fall and became the top gainer, up nearly 1%. The Nifty Consumer Durables was the only other sectoral index to end in the green, though just about. All other sectoral indices ended lower. The Nifty Energy was down over 1%.
A majority of the Nifty 50 stocks settled lower for the session while only 16 constituents gained. Max Healthcare Institute was the worst-hit stock in the index, down nearly 2%. Coal India and Power Grid Corp. also fell nearly 2?ch. On the other hand, information technology major HCL Technologies rose slightly over 2% and emerged as the top gainer after a three-day fall.
Banking and financial services stocks were also major drags on the Nifty 50. Bajaj Finance and Jio Financial Services were down over 1?ch. Index heavyweight ICICI Bank and Axis Bank were down nearly 1%.
In the Nifty 200, energy stocks fell the most. Hitachi Energy India was the key drag, down over 4%. Shares of Adani Energy Solutions were down nearly 4% while those of CG Power and Industrial Solutions fell over 3%. Siemens Energy India, down for the second session, fell 3%.
In the Nifty 500 universe, Netweb Technologies India was the top loser, down over 5%. Acutaas Chemicals and Cemindia Projects were down over 4?ch.
Among the gainers, JSW Steel was the second-biggest in the Nifty 50, up over 1%. Sun Pharmaceutical Industries and Eternal were the other stocks to rise over 1%. Other IT stocks such as Wipro, Infosys, and Tata Consultancy Services were up 0.4-0.8%.
In the Nifty 200, ICICI Prudential Asset Management Co. was the top gainer, up 5%. Adani Total Gas and One 97 Communications were up over 2?ch. Among the Nifty 500 stocks, Glaxosmithkline Pharmaceuticals was the top gainer, up over 5%. The stock has risen 18% in the past 10 sessions.
