NEW DELHI – The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs Wednesday approved four-laning of a section on National Highway-22 in Bihar, with an outlay of INR 35.91 billion. The 83-kilometre-long corridor will connect Muzaffarpur district with Sitamarhi district and Sonbarsa in Bihar, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in a briefing.
The development of the Muzaffarpur-Sitamarhi-Sonbarsa corridor will be completed in 30 months, Vaishanaw said. The highway will stimulate economic activity, boost tourism, and contribute to the overall socio-economic development.
The proposed project has provision for seven major bridges, three railway over bridges, and two flyovers to maintain cross movement of the traffic and ensure safe, high-speed travel, according to a press release.
The corridor has strategic and economic importance due to its integration with Bihar's expanding National Highway network. "It acts as a key feeder corridor connecting the India–Nepal border at Sonbarsa with economic centers like Muzaffarpur at NH-27 (East–West Corridor)," the government said in the release.
Further, the upgraded corridor will improve connectivity to five PM Gati-Shakti economic nodes, four social nodes, and two logistic nodes--Muzaffarpur and Sitamarhi railway stations--thereby, facilitating faster movement of goods and passengers across the region, the release said End
