MUMBAI – The concentration of most active weather systems over the northern parts of the country is likely to keep intense rainfall restricted to parts of northwest and central India over the next few days, the India Meteorological Department said. Most parts of east and northeast India are expected to record heavy rainfall during the same period, while only moderate showers are expected over parts of west and southern peninsular India, the weather department said.

 

A depression lies over north Jharkhand and adjoining southwest Bihar and southeast Uttar Pradesh, which is likely to move across Jharkhand, southeast Uttar Pradesh, and north Chhattisgarh and weaken into a well-marked low pressure area in the next 12 hours, the weather bureau said. A trough runs from the north Uttar Pradesh to a cyclonic circulation associated with the depression.

 

These weather systems are expected to trigger very heavy rainfall over parts of east Madhya Pradesh till Saturday, over west Madhya Pradesh on Saturday, and over Chhattisgarh till Friday, the bureau said. Heavy rainfall is expected to persist over parts of Madhya Pradesh till Tuesday, and thunderstorms and lightning are seen over parts of Chhattisgarh till Sunday.

 

An upper cyclonic circulation lies over Punjab, with a trough associated with it running to the northwest of the country. Another circulation lies over northeast Rajasthan. These systems, along with the depression, are expected to cause very heavy rainfall over parts of west Uttar Pradesh till Thursday, the weather department said. Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning are likely to continue over several parts of northwest India till Tuesday, the department said.

 

The presence of the depression and an upper air cyclonic circulation over central Assam is expected to keep up the spell of heavy showers over most parts of east and northeast India till Tuesday, the weather bureau said. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are forecast over multiple parts of east India during the same period, while thunderstorms and lightning are likely over many parts of northeast India till Saturday. Moderate to severe lightning is expected over Bihar on Saturday, the bureau said.

 

Light to moderate rainfall is likely to continue over most parts of west and south peninsular India till Tuesday, the weather department said. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are forecast over several parts of south peninsular India till Sunday. Strong surface winds are expected over parts of Karnataka till Thursday and over Andhra Pradesh till Sunday. In west India, thunderstorms and lightning are likely over parts of central Maharashtra and Marathwada till Thursday, the department said.  End
