MUMBAI – The Securities and Exchange Board of India has constituted a team internally with the task of scanning quarterly financial results of listed companies using technological tools to flag off potential cases of financial accounts manipulation, Whole Time Member Kamlesh Chandra Varshney said at a capital markets conference in Mumbai Wednesday. Alluding to the recent interim order against Rajesh Exports Ltd. and its promoter, where SEBI had prima facie found severe manipulation of financial statements and violation of listing regulations, Varshney said the stock market regulator had taken feedback from the market about why it had to wait for shareholder complaints to probe and unearth the findings in the Rajesh Exports case in a positive manner.
He said SEBI had advanced tools to flag off and investigate price manipulation in trading in the equity markets and the market regulator was keen on having similar strong capabilities to financial statements of companies.
On bad use of artificial intelligence tools in the stock market in cases such as impersonation-related money collection fraud and financial mis-selling by finfluencers, the SEBI whole time member said the market regulator was collaborating with companies such as Google and Meta to take off such content from the internet without delay. SEBI will also continue taking enforcement action in such cases, he said.
SEBI's whole time member Sandip Pradhan said in the conference investor trust in the markets was important. A market that is not trusted cannot sustain investor participation and growth momentum, according to Pradhan. End
