India Tue rainfall 18% above normal; season-to-date deficit at 13%, says IMD

MUMBAI – India recorded 9.1 millimetres of rain Tuesday, 18?ove the normal of 7.7 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. During Jun. 1–Aug. 18, the country received 527.8 millimetres of rain, 13?low the normal of 603.9 millimetres for the period.
Of the country's four homogeneous regions, east and northeast India received "large excess" rains Tuesday and south India registered "large deficient" rainfall. While north west India received "excess" rains, central India registered "normal" rains Tuesday.
The east and northeast region received 97?ove-normal rainfall at 21.8 millimetres and central India recorded 9.0 millimetres of rainfall, 2% above normal. Meanwhile, south India received 69% below-normal rains at 1.9 millimetres and northwest India recorded 7.4 millimetres of rainfall, 25?ove normal.
Tuesday, Gangetic West Bengal received the highest rainfall at 47.9 millimetres, followed by west Uttar Pradesh at 23.4 millimetres, according to the weather bureau's data. The bureau has issued a red alert for east Uttar Pradesh due to forecasts of extremely heavy rainfall Wednesday.
Of the 36 sub-divisions in the country, rainfall was "large deficient" in 12, "deficient" in 10, "excess" in one, "large excess" in eight, and "normal" in four. There was no rain in one sub-division, according to the data. End
