MUMBAI – The Nifty 50 index settled lower for the sixth successive session Tuesday with crude oil prices edging to a nearly three-week high of $91 a barrel. The BSE Sensex closed lower for the third straight day. The Nifty 50 closed below 24200 points for the first time in three weeks. The fall in information technology stocks largely pulled the index down.

The worsening situation on the West Asia war front hurt market sentiment. President Donald Trump threatened to bomb US ally Oman if it "gets in the way" of his administration's own talks with Iran, the BBC reported, citing Fox News. Trump also claimed that informal talks were taking place with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps but said he is "not in a hurry" to make a deal, according to a CNBC report. At 1542 IST, the Brent Crude Oil contract for October delivery was largely flat at $90.83 a barrel.

At the end of the continuous trading session on the exchanges at 1515 IST, the Nifty 50 was at 24166.35 points, down 0.5% from Friday. The BSE Sensex was at 77325.87 points, down 0.5%. After the closing auction session, the Nifty 50 ended at 24154.90, down 132.75 points or 0.6%. The Sensex ended at 77235.46, down 492.70 points or 0.6%.

Barring the Nifty Smallcap 250 index, all the broader market indices settled marginally lower. Sectoral indices were mixed with Nifty IT falling the most. The sectoral index, down almost 2%, ended lower for the third straight session. Investor nervousness was slightly up as India VIX settled 0.3% higher at 11.3600 points.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles was the top drag on the 50-stock index, down over 2%. A rise of over 1% in index heavyweight Axis Bank, the top performer for the session, limited the fall of the index.

IT majors Infosys, HCL Technologies, Wipro, and Tech Mahindra were the other major losers in the 50-stock index, down 1–2%. Banking and financial services stocks in the Nifty 50 also performed poorly. Shriram Finance and Jio Financial Services fell over 1?ch.

In the Nifty 200, SBI Cards and Payment Services fell the most, over 4%. The stock fell the most in the Nifty 500 index as well. Oberoi Realty and Lodha Developers fell over 3?ch in the Nifty 200. These stocks dragged the Nifty Realty index down, making it the second-biggest loser among sectoral indices.

Colgate-Palmolive (India) also fell over 3% in the Nifty 200 index. Shares of the company were down for the seventh straight session. The stock has fallen over 6% in this period. In the Nifty 500, Inox Wind and PTC Industries ended around 4% lower.

Among the stocks to rise in the Nifty 50 were Max Healthcare Institute, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Grasim Industries, up around 1?ch. Tube Investments of India rose 8% to top the Nifty 200 index. Bosch and Multi Commodity Exchange of India were the other major gainers in the index, up nearly 4?ch.

While Tube Investments ended among the top gainers in the Nifty 500 as well, Jyoti CNC Automation rose slightly over 8% to be the top performer. Prime Focus and Glaxosmithkline Pharmaceuticals were up around 7?ch.

Shares of Milky Mist Dairy Food were listed on the National Stock Exchange at a premium of 18% to the issue price of INR 140.
