Govt imposes minimum import price on clear float glass to restrict imports

NEW DELHI – The government has restricted imports of clear float glass for one year by introducing a minimum import price, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade said in a notification Tuesday. Clear float glass is a smooth, distortion-free flat glass used in architecture, automotive windows, mirrors, and furniture tops. It is also used as the core base material to manufacture specialised safety and insulated glass products.
According to the notification, imports priced at or above INR 34,000 per tonne on a cost, insurance, and freight value basis will continue to be permitted, while shipments below the threshold will face restriction.
The restriction, however, will not be applicable for import by Export Oriented Units, units in the Special Economic Zones, and imports under the Advance Authorisation Scheme, subject to the condition that the imported inputs are not sold into the Domestic Tariff Area, the notification said. End
