MUMBAI – Under the influence of the depression lying over Jharkhand and adjoining north Gangetic West Bengal and an upper air cyclonic circulation over east Uttar Pradesh, extremely heavy rainfall is likely over southern parts of east Uttar Pradesh, the India Meteorological Department said. The weather department has issued a red alert for the same. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.

The depression is expected to move across Jharkhand and Bihar and weaken into a well-marked low pressure area in the next 24 hours, the weather department said. Only a few other active weather systems lie over the country, with all of them concentrated over parts of north peninsular India. 

An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over north Haryana, while another lies over Punjab, with a trough running through it. These circulations, along with the depression and the monsoon trough, are likely to cause very heavy rainfall over parts of Uttarakhand till Wednesday and over parts of Uttar Pradesh till Thursday, the department said. Heavy rainfall is expected to persist over most parts of northwest India till Monday, while thunderstorms and lightning are likely over Uttarakhand during the same period.

The presence of the depression is also expected to trigger very heavy rainfall over parts of east Madhya Pradesh till Thursday and west Madhya Pradesh on Saturday, the weather bureau said. Heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Madhya Pradesh till Sunday, Chhattisgarh on Wednesday, and over Vidarbha till Wednesday, the bureau said. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are seen over parts of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh till Saturday.

The weather system is also likely to keep causing heavy rainfall over several parts of east and northeast India till Monday, the weather bureau said. Thunderstorms and lightning are likely over most parts of northeast India till Saturday and over Odisha on Saturday. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are forecast over parts of West Bengal, Sikkim, Jharkhand, and Bihar till Monday, the bureau said.

With the absence of active weather systems, west and south peninsular India are expected to receive subdued rainfall in the next few days, the weather department said. Heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Karnataka and Kerala till Wednesday and over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Wednesday. Strong surface winds are likely to continue over pockets of Karnataka till Thursday and over Andhra Pradesh till Saturday. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are forecast over many parts of south peninsular India till Saturday.

Light to moderate rainfall is expected to persist over most parts of west India till Monday. Thunderstorms and lightning are seen over central Maharashtra on Wednesday and over Marathwada till Wednesday, the weather department said.  End
