India Mon rainfall 15% below normal, season-to-date deficit at 13%, says IMD

MUMBAI – India recorded 7.0 millimetres of rain Monday, 15?low the normal of 8.2 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. During Jun. 1–Aug. 17, the country received 518.7 millimetres of rain, 13?low the normal of 596.2 millimetres for the period.
Of the country's four homogeneous regions, east and northeast India, northwest India, and central India received "normal" rains Monday while south India registered "large deficient" rainfall. The east and northeast region received 3?ove-normal rainfall at 11.5 millimetres and central India recorded 8.5 millimetres of rainfall, 10% below normal. Meanwhile, south India received 75% below-normal rains at 1.6 millimetres and northwest India recorded 6.3 millimetres of rainfall, 2?ove normal.
Monday, Gangetic West Bengal received the highest rainfall at 27.9 millimetres, followed by Odisha at 21.6 millimetres, according to the weather bureau's data. The bureau has issued a red alert for Jharkhand due to forecasts of extremely heavy rainfall Tuesday.
Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was "large deficient" in 16, "deficient" in eight, "excess" in five, "large excess" in four, and "normal" in three, according to the data. End
