MUMBAI – The low pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coasts of West Bengal and Odisha strengthened into a well-marked low pressure in the late hours of Sunday, after which it intensified further into a depression early Monday, the India Meteorological Department said. Under its influence, heavy to very heavy rainfall with spells of extremely heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Jharkhand on Tuesday, the weather department said.
The depression is also expected to cause very heavy rainfall over Bihar and Odisha Tuesday, the department said. Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over several parts of east India till Sunday. The same weather system is also likely to trigger heavy showers over most parts of northeast India till Sunday, while thunderstorms and lightning are likely in the region till Friday.
A shear zone runs across central and adjoining north peninsular India, the weather bureau said. This system, along with the depression, is expected to cause very heavy rainfall over parts of east Madhya Pradesh till Wednesday and over Chhattisgarh on Tuesday, the bureau said. Thunderstorms and lightning are seen over parts of Chhattisgarh from Tuesday to Friday. Heavy showers are expected over parts of Madhya Pradesh from Thursday to Sunday and over Chhattisgarh on Wednesday, the bureau said.
Currently, four upper air cyclonic circulations lie over various parts of northwest India. Under the combined influence of these systems and the shear zone, very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Himachal Pradesh and west Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday and over east Uttar Pradesh on Thursday and Friday. Heavy showers are expected to continue over multiple parts of northwest India till Sunday, while thunderstorms and lightning are forecast over parts of Uttarakhand till Sunday.
The absence of active weather systems over west and south peninsular India is likely to keep the intensity of rainfall subdued over these regions. Heavy rainfall is seen over parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Tuesday and Wednesday and over Kerala on Tuesday. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over many parts of south peninsular India till Friday. Strong surface winds are seen over parts of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana till Friday, the weather bureau said.
In west India, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely over parts of the Gujarat region till Wednesday. Light to moderate showers are expected to persist over most parts of west India till Sunday, the bureau said. End
