India's Sunday rainfall 30% below normal, season's deficit at 13%, says IMD

MUMBAI – India received 6.2 millimetres of rainfall on Sunday, 30% below the normal of 8.9 millimetres, data from the India Meteorological Department showed. During Jun. 1-Aug. 16, the country recorded 511.8 millimetres, 13% below normal for the period.
All four homogenous regions recorded a shortfall in precipitation on Sunday. South peninsular India continued to receive deficient rainfall due to the lack of active weather systems over the region. The region received 2.2 millimetres of showers Sunday, 66% below the normal of 6.3 millimetres.
Most active monsoon weather systems remained confined to the Bay of Bengal and north peninsular India. Central India received 9.5 millimetres of rainfall, 7% below normal, the data showed. The formation of a low pressure area led to intense rainfall over this region, though it was not sufficient to rise above normal for the day.
Rainfall in northwest India was 28% below normal at 5.7 millimetres, while in east and northeast India it was 52% below normal at 5.6 millimetres, according to the data.
In the 36 subdivisions across the country, rainfall was "large deficient" in 17, "deficient" in 11, "normal" in four, "excess" in two, and "large excess" in two, the data showed. End
