MUMBAI – Shares of top automobile and ancillary companies are expected to return to the green in the coming week, analysts said. The Nifty Auto index, which witnessed a strong rally following a breakout above 27500 points, still shows bullish indicators, according to technical analysts.

Friday, the Nifty Auto closed 0.6% lower at 29207.90 points. The sectoral index closed 1.5% lower this week, snapping a four-week gaining streak. Unlike the previous week, the index performed worse than the benchmark Nifty 50, which fell 0.8%.

"The psychological level of 30000 (points) could act as the next major resistance, while immediate support is placed at 29900 and positional support at 29600," Vatsal Bhuva, technical and derivatives analyst at LKP Securities, said.

This week, only four stocks that are part of the Nifty Auto index closed in the green. Bosch was the best performer, up almost 10%. Among the 11 losers, Bharat Forge fell the most, down nearly 9%. "Within the auto sector, the two-wheeler segment continues to show a strong bullish structure, with Hero MotoCorp, TVS Motor and Bajaj Auto maintaining a positive technical setup," Bhuva said.

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers Thursday disclosed wholesale sales data for July. Dispatches surged a little over 24% on year to 3.09 million units, including domestic and export sales. Led by growth in passenger cars, passenger vehicle dispatches outperformed those of two-wheelers in India.

All major automobile and ancillary companies have disclosed their financials for the June quarter. While the industry continued to cheer sustained growth in sales, it collectively lamented the threat from continued pressure stemming from higher commodity costs. There is a sense of optimism that the resultant vehicle price hikes have not been major enough to dent the momentum spurred by the cut in goods and services tax.

However, automobile companies expect some moderation in on-year sales growth from the December quarter, on account of a higher base. Some companies such as Ashok Leyland hope things will normalise from the final quarter of the current financial year, but most remain on their toes, unwilling to pinpoint when the issue may ease.
