MUMBAI – Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan Friday launched a pilot programme to transfer funds for ration and foodgrains directly to beneficiaries in Chandigarh, Punjab. Through a central bank digital currency-based direct benefit transfer system, or CBDC-based DBT model, food security will be ensured directly and digitally to beneficiaries. The pilot will serve as a model for the rest of the country, the agriculture ministry said.

 

Under the new system, the government has enabled technological safeguards to ensure funds are used only for purchasing foodgrains and other essential food items. Beneficiaries will have greater choice and can opt to buy pulses and other essential food commodities, in addition to wheat and rice. 

 

The system is expected to ensure that benefits reach account holders directly. It also aims to reduce the scope for intermediaries and irregularities. The system will ensure better transparency, security and timeliness in the Public Distribution System.  End
