MUMBAI – The Nifty Pharma index is expected to be range-bound next week, primarily because of a high likelihood of profit-taking. Shares of index constituents have risen sharply over the past six months on the back of strong domestic sales growth reported by the companies and defensive purchases by investors. This week, stocks of some contract development and manufacturing organisations continued to outperform their industry peers, but some others faced profit-taking at high levels.
"Investors continue to punish companies that have a large presence in the US," an analyst at a domestic brokerage said. "Lupin's result shows that US-focussed companies continue to struggle with price erosion." However, the analyst added that new drug launches "look exciting" and the price erosion in sales of key generics such as Tolvaptan, Mirabegron, and, chiefly, Revlimid are forcing companies to diversify into different fields such as biosimilars, which will be beneficial for them in the long term.
While the war in West Asia has opened up a new stream of investors that sought exposure to pharmaceutical companies for their largely inelastic demand, many have "stayed for long", the analyst said. This buying in pharma stocks continued due to very strong traction in domestic sales, favourable commentary in rest-of-the-world markets, and an expected pick-up in US sales. Additionally, stocks of contract development manufacturers rose sharply on a healthy discretionary spending trend in the US and strong revenue growth in the June quarter.
For the past two weeks, the Nifty Pharma index has been consolidating in a narrow range of 26350–26800 points. The possibility of some profit-taking cannot be ruled out at this juncture, Vipin Kumar, assistant vice-president of research at Globe Capital Market, said. The overall chart structure remains positive as long as the index holds above the 25300–25400 points, the analyst said, and suggested that any dip toward 25600 points should be viewed as a fresh buying opportunity.
This week, the Nifty Pharma index ended nearly 0.4% lower at 26445.55 points. Shares of contract development manufacturers like Gland Pharma and Sai Life Sciences rose over 14% and 6%, respectively. Divi's Laboratories also closed the week over 2% higher. In the past 30 days, stocks of the three contract development manufacturers have risen over 14–19%. Meanwhile, shares of Wockhardt, Alkem Laboratories, Laurus Labs, and Biocon, all of which operate in this space, ended 2–4% lower. Wockhardt and Laurus Labs have risen over 4% and 14% in the past 30 days, respectively. Shares of Piramal Pharma have risen over 20% in the past 30 days, but ended the week 1.4% lower Friday.
