MUMBAI – The Nifty Bank is likely to remain range-bound in the near term, with global cues, crude oil prices, and geopolitical developments expected to drive sentiment, analysts said. The index closed at 57,491.10 points Friday, down 0.4% week-on-week, but outperformed the benchmark Nifty 50, which fell 0.8% to 24,366.
Within the banking pack, Punjab National Bank was the top gainer, up 2.8% during the week, followed by AU Small Finance Bank, which gained 1.4%, and IDFC FIRST Bank, up 1.3%. Kotak Mahindra Bank also edged up 0.1%. On the downside, State Bank of India was the biggest loser, down 2.7%, followed by Axis Bank, which shed 1.7%, and Federal Bank, which declined 1.4%.
The Nifty Bank will face immediate resistance at 57,818.70 and find support at 57,216.70. The relatively smaller weekly decline compared with the Nifty 50 indicates some resilience in banking stocks, analysts said. State-owned banks in particular remain supported by healthy asset quality, attractive valuations, and a favourable credit-growth outlook.
However, the near-term outlook remains cautious as Brent crude oil hovers near $87 per barrel, tensions between the US and Iran remain high, and broader global uncertainty could weigh on risk appetite. Investors will also track the minutes of the US Federal Reserve's last policy meeting and crude oil inventory data. The Nifty Bank's sustained move above 57,818.70 could improve its momentum, while a break below 57,216.70 may signal further weakness for the index, analysts said.
