NEW DELHI – India's foreign exchange reserves jumped to a 21-week high of $707.00 billion as of Aug. 7, data released by the Reserve Bank of India Friday showed. The reserves rose by $14.14 billion on week, the sharpest rise since the week ended Jan. 30. The growth in the foreign exchange reserves was mainly on the back of an increase in foreign currency assets.
The rupee appreciated 0.2% against the dollar in the week ended Aug. 7. The rise in the domestic currency during the week was supported by a fall of over 7% in the price of crude oil since Jul. 31, according to dealers. Foreign currency assets rose $9.95 billion from a week ago to $574.63 billion as of Aug. 7. The value of the central bank's gold holdings rose by $4.00 billion on week to $108.74 billion.
Calculated in dollar terms, the RBI's foreign exchange reserves also reflect the impact of the appreciation or depreciation of currencies other than the dollar, such as the euro, the pound sterling, and the yen, held by the central bank. End
