MUMBAI – The benchmark equity indices ended lower Friday, closing out the second week of August with a fall of 0.6-0.8%. The Nifty 50 ended lower for the fourth successive session. Only 11 of its 50 constituents ended higher. Traders sold shares of pharmaceutical, automobile, and metal companies, buying media and consumer durable stocks. Brent crude oil hovering around $89 a barrel also weighed on sentiment. With all the Nifty 50 companies having declared their earnings, the June-quarter financial results season has more or less drawn to a close.

The intensifying war of words between the US and Iran kept traders from placing bullish bets Friday. The US late Thursday said it would maintain the naval blockade of Iranian ports indefinitely, raising concern about crude oil supply disruptions in the region. At 1625 IST, the Brent crude oil contract for October delivery was at $87.20 a dollar.

The Nifty 50 ended at 24366 points, down 29.85 points or 0.1%. The index had dipped to a low of 24296.80 points but came off the low in the final two hours of trade. There was largely no disparity in the closing levels of the benchmark indices this week, with the price discovered through the closing auction session being more or less in alignment with the levels at the end of continuous trade.

This Nifty 50 was under constant selling pressure through the week with hopes of a peace deal between the US and Iran fizzling out after both Washington and Tehran prioritised their demands over compromises. Consequently, Brent crude oil hit a high of $90 a dollar earlier in the week and has remained around that level since.

The BSE Sensex ended at 78009.25, down 70.71 points or 0.1%. The broader market indices fell more sharply, ending 0.5-0.7% lower. Week-on-week, the mid-cap indices outperformed both the headline indices and the small-cap ones and ended slightly higher. Analysts had expected stocks in the small-cap and mid-cap indices to do better than large-cap stocks.

Traders sold shares of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles after the company's weak June quarter results. The company's consolidated bottom line for the June quarter fell sharply on year as the continued underperformance by its UK-based subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover Automotive PLC offset the strong performance of its domestic car business. The automaker's consolidated net profit for the June quarter was INR 7.75 billion, down 80% on year and 87% on quarter. Its consolidated revenues grew 9% on year but fell by the same quantum on quarter to INR 957.99 billion. The stock closed at INR 334.50, down over 4%.

LG Electronics India ended around 10% higher at INR 1,729.70 and was the best peformer of the Nifty 500 index. The company reported higher-than-expected net profit for the June quarter despite an increase in total expenses. The company's revenue from operations increased sharply on the back of volume- and value-led growth. Both the top line and bottom line comfortably beat the Street's estimates.

Non-ferrous metal companies such as National Aluminium Co., Hindustan Zinc, Hindustan Copper, and Hindalco Industries ended 2-6% lower. This led the Nifty Metal index to close 0.7% lower at 12941.70 points.
