Water storage in key reservoirs at 109.1 bcm as of Thu, down 20% on year

MUMBAI – Water storage in 166 key reservoirs across the country was at 109.1 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, down 20% from 135.6 bcm a year ago, according to data from the Central Water Commission. The current storage accounted for 59.4% of the total live storage capacity and was over 2% below the average storage over the past 10 years, the data showed.
In the northern region, which has 11 reservoirs, the total live storage capacity was 10.02 bcm, or 50.5% of total live storage capacity. This was sharply lower than 75.3% of the live storage capacity a year ago. The northern region includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.
Reservoirs in the eastern region held 11.061 bcm, or 50.8% of total live storage capacity. A year ago, the total live storage capacity of the 27 reservoirs in the region was 54.6%. The eastern region includes Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, West Bengal, and Bihar.
Reservoirs in the western region, which includes Goa, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, held 30.011 bcm or 78.8% of the total live storage capacity across 53 reservoirs. This was higher than 75.7% of the live storage capacity a year ago.
In the central region, which includes Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, 28 reservoirs held 27.70 bcm or 57.0% of the total live storage capacity. This was sharply lower than the 73.9% of live storage capacity a year ago.
The water level in the southern region was 30.316 bcm, or 54.8% of total live capacity across 47 reservoirs. The region includes Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. At this time last year, the water level was 79.7% of the total live storage capacity. End
