HYDERABAD - Higher operating costs and increased tax expenses dragged down Alkem Laboratories Ltd.'s June quarter net profit. The bottom line was slightly lower than the Street's estimate.

Alkem Laboratories reported a consolidated net profit of INR 5.20 billion, down nearly 22% on year but up nearly 120% on quarter. The net profit was below analysts' estimate of INR 5.69 billion. Revenue from operations for the quarter was INR 37.40 billion, up nearly 11% on year and nearly 4% on quarter, but below the estimate of INR 37.78 billion.

The company reported a rise of nearly 144% on year in its tax expenses for the June quarter, while its total operating expenses increased INR 13.5% on year to INR 31.21 billion.

Though the company's sales in all regions increased, higher operating costs dented its overall profitability for the quarter. Alkem Laboratories spent INR 1.5 billion on research and development, which is 3.5% of its total revenues, against INR 1.18 billion a year ago. Other expenses rose 26% on year to INR 9.64 billion and input costs grew 10% to INR 9.1 billion. Its employee costs also increased nearly 17% to INR 8 billion.

Alkem Laboratories posted a 10% on-year rise in its India sales to INR 24.98 billion led by robust growth in its acute and chronic category products sales, while its anti-infective, gastro-intestinal, pain, anti-diabetic, dermatology, and respiratory segments contributed to the sales growth for the quarter. India accounts for 67% of the company's total sales.

Revenues from the US were up 6.5% on year at INR 7.44 billion. The US accounts for 20% of the company's total sales. Sales from non-US markets rose 35% to INR 4.79 billion.

The company's gross profit margin for the quarter was 67.9%, up from 65.3% a year ago. Its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation margin for the June quarter, however, shrank by nearly 140 basis points on year to 20.5%. The EBITDA for the quarter was up 3.7% at INR 7.66 billion.

At 1433 IST, shares of Alkem Laboratories were at INR 5,319.50 apiece on the National Stock Exchange, down 2.4% from Thursday.  End
