NEW DELHI – Cholamandalam Financial Holdings Ltd.'s consolidated net profit grew at the fastest pace year-on-year in eight quarters in Apr-Jun, helped by healthy growth in revenue. However, a rise in finance costs ate into the company's bottom line.  

 

Cholamandalam Financial's consolidated profit for the June quarter was INR 8.06 billion, up over 39% on year and 17% on quarter. Following the announcement of the earnings, at 1334 IST, the company's shares were up over 2% from the previous close at INR 1,623 on the National Stock Exchange. Before the earnings announcement, the shares were up almost 1%. 

 

The company's total income in the June quarter rose over 19% on year to INR 112.14 billion. This was the biggest jump in the company's total income in four quarters.

 

Of the total income, interest income rose over 20% on year to INR 83.63 billion. Other income grew over 16% on year to INR 1.01 billion in the reporting quarter, while revenue from fee and commission rose almost 33% on year to INR 7.13 billion. Premium ceded to reinsurers--a drag on the top line--declined to INR 6.11 billion from INR 4.83 billion in the year-ago quarter.

 

The company's total expenses rose almost 15% on year to INR 88.16 billion in the June quarter. Finance costs – the biggest chunk in total expenses -- grew over 15% on year to INR 40.07 billion. The company's employee benefits expense rose over 21% on year to INR 12.75 billion and other expenses rose over 16% on year to INR 10.66 billion. The company's insurance claims rose almost 13% on year to INR 14.58 billion.

 

Cholamandalam MS General Insurance Co. Ltd., a subsidiary in the general insurance business, in which the company holds about 60% stake, reported a net profit of INR 860 million in the June quarter, down almost 20% from the year-ago period. The company posted a gross written premium of INR 21.31 billion in the June quarter compared to INR 19.97 billion in the year-ago quarter. 

 

Last month, Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Co. Ltd., a subsidiary in the non-banking finance business, in which the company holds 43.74% stake, reported a net profit of INR 16.54 billion in the June quarter, up nearly 46% on year. The company's assets under management rose 22% on year to INR 2.34 trillion as on Jun. 30. 

 

Cholamandalam Financial Holdings also holds 49.5% stake in Cholamandalam MS Risk Services Ltd., which is a joint venture with Japan's Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group.  End
