India Thursday rainfall 32% below normal, season-to-date deficit at 12%, says IMD

MUMBAI – India recorded 6.3 millimetres of rain Thursday, 32?low the normal of 9.3 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. During Jun. 1–Aug. 13, the country received 491.8 millimetres of rain, 12?low the normal of 561.9 millimetres for the period.

 

All the four homogeneous regions of the country--east and northeast India, northwest India, south India, and central India--received "deficient" rains Thursday. The east and northeast region received 40?low-normal rains at 7.9 millimetres Thursday, south India received 51% below-normal rains at 3.2 millimetres, and northwest India recorded 5.9 millimetres of rainfall, 25?low normal. Meanwhile, central India recorded 7.8 millimetres of rainfall, 23% below normal. 

 

Thursday, Gangetic West Bengal received the highest rainfall at 38.8 millimetres, followed by coastal Karnataka at 25.3 millimetres, according to the weather bureau's data. Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was "large deficient" in 19, "deficient" in eight, "normal" in five, "large excess" in three, and "excess" in one, according to the data.  End
