MUMBAI – Technical analysts expect headline indices to be in a range in the near term on the lack of substantial triggers with the June quarter earnings season nearing its end. However, the developments around the war in West Asia and the consequent movement in crude oil prices will be closely monitored by traders. Analysts were largely positive about the Apr-Jun corporate results and saw broader market companies to have done better than large-cap peers. That said, the comments from the managements of various companies pointed out that they would not hesitate to take price hikes to offset the war-induced rise in input costs.

"Going forward, with the quarterly earnings season drawing to a close, market participants are likely to await a meaningful trigger to revive market momentum," Osho Krishan, chief manager – technical and derivatives research at Angel One, said in a note. "In the interim, traders should maintain a stock-specific approach and focus on relative strength, as the broader market continues to lack a clear directional bias," he added. The low of 24265 points appears critical and any correction below this level is likely to aggravate the sell-off in the index, dragging it towards 24200-24150 points, Krishan said.

Thursday, the Nifty 50 remained in the red throughout the session and settled at 24395.85, down 40.10 points or 0.2%. The index slipped below the crucial support of 24400 points and could not recover. Analysts have said before that a fall below this threshold could see the 50-stock index falling to 24200 points. Meanwhile, the BSE Sensex ended at 78079.96, up 113.61 points or 0.2%.

Earlier in the day, global index provider MSCI added Adani Energy Solutions, Billionbrains Garage Ventures, Laurus Labs, and Lenskart Solutions to its global standard index as part of its August index review, removing Astral, Balkrishna Industries, and SBI Cards and Payments Services. Following the reshuffle, the number of Indian constituents in the key MSCI index will rise to 166 from 165. The changes will be implemented after the close of trading on Aug. 31, and take effect on Sept. 1, MSCI said.

Traders will react to the June quarter results of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Friday. It was the last Nifty 50 company to disclose its earnings this season. Persistent input cost pressures and supply chain disruptions weighed on sales of the luxury automobile arm Jaguar Land Rover even as Tata Motors PV's domestic business remained resilient. Its consolidated bottom line fell sharply on year as continued underperformance of its UK-based subsidiary eclipsed the strong performance of its domestic car business. The automaker's consolidated net profit for the June quarter was INR 7.75 billion, down 80% on year and 87% on quarter. Revenues rose 9% on year but fell by the same quantum on quarter to INR 957.99 billion. Consensus estimates had forecast its net profit at INR 12.54 billion and revenues at INR 924.73 billion. The stock ended at INR 349.60 on the National Stock Exchange, up 1.9% from Wednesday.  End
