NEW DELHI – India's merchandise trade deficit in July widened to a six-month high because of higher imports of petroleum products and electronics goods. According to data detailed by the commerce ministry on Thursday, India's goods trade deficit rose 14.7% on year to $31.98 billion in July.

 

The trade deficit in July was higher than $30.43 billion in June. Economists at State Bank of India had estimated the trade deficit in July at $30 billion.

 

Goods exports rose nearly 20% on year to $44.24 billion in July. India's imports jumped nearly 18% to $76.22 billion last month. In June, India had exported goods worth $40.41 billion and imported goods worth $70.84 billion.

 

The services trade surplus inched up 3% on year to $16.95 billion in July due to a 6.4% rise in services exports at $35.89 billion. Services trade imports rose 10% on year to $18.94 billion last month.

 

The overall trade – goods and services – deficit widened over 31% on year to $15.03 billion in July, with overall imports growing nearly 16% on year to $95.16 billion. Overall exports rose over 13% on year to $80.14 billion in July.

 

For Apr-Jul, India's merchandise trade deficit widened nearly 23% on year to $118.60 billion. Merchandise imports rose over 19% on year to $292.38 billion in Apr-Jul, while exports grew 17% on year to $173.78 billion during the period. 

 

The rise in India's merchandise imports in Apr-Jul was mainly due to higher inbound shipments of petroleum products, electronic goods, and gold. India imported crude oil worth $78.92 billion during Apr-Jul, higher than $64.81 billion a year ago. Non-oil imports increased to $213.46 billion in Apr-Jul from $180.33 billion in the corresponding period a year ago.

 

Within non-oil imports, electronic goods imports surged to $52.82 billion in Apr-Jul from $36.59 billion a year ago. Gold shipments rose to $15.17 billion in the first four months of the current financial year, up from $11.46 billion a year ago.

 

China was India's biggest import source nation in the last four months, with goods imports worth $52.71 billion, up from $40.65 billion a year ago. Imports from Russia rose to $34.50 billion in Apr-Jul from $21.61 billion a year ago. 

 

Imports from the US were at $22.12 billion in Apr-Jul, up from $18.07 a year ago. Outbound shipments to the US rose to $34.49 during the period under review from $33.48 a year ago. About 45% of India's exports to the US remain exempted from the additional 10% duty, the government said.

 

Outbound shipments to China increased to $7.78 billion in Apr-Jul from $5.72 billion in the corresponding period a year ago. Outbound shipments to Singapore jumped over 97% on year in Apr-Jul to $8.11 billion.

 

Goods exports to the United Arab Emirates were down over 6% on year at $11.22 billion during the last four months.

 

India's goods trade activity with West Asia picked up after the sharp decilne in March. Exports to West Asia showed growth in July, Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal said during a press conference. India exported goods worth $5.7 billion to West Asia in July, down slightly from $5.2 billion a year ago.

 

Merchandise exports to the European Union rose 3.6% on year to $22.43 billion during Apr-Jul.

 

India's non-oil exports rose 13% on year to $143.61 billion in Apr-Jul. Within non-oil exports, engineering goods exports rose to $46.38 billion in Apr-Jul from $39.24 billion a year ago. Electronic goods exports grew nearly 31% on year to $21.11 billion. India's petroleum product exports rose to $30.17 billion during Apr-Jul, up nearly 43% on year.  End
