MUMBAI – Strengthening of a weather system over the Bay of Bengal and the presence of other weather systems are expected to cause heavy to very heavy rainfall with spells of extremely heavy rainfall over parts of Chhattisgarh till Friday, the India Meteorological Department said. A red alert has been issued for the same, the weather department said. A red alert indicates rainfall exceeding 204.5 millimetres in 24 hours and is the highest level of weather warning.
The well-marked low pressure over coastal West Bengal moved northwards and strengthened into a depression in the early hours of Thursday, the weather bureau said. It is likely to move across Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand in the next 24 hours. A shear zone runs across central and north peninsular India, while an upper air cyclonic circulation lies over northwest Madhya Pradesh, the bureau said. These systems are expected to also cause very heavy rainfall over parts of west Madhya Pradesh on Sunday and Monday, over east Madhya Pradesh from Saturday to Monday, and over Chhattisgarh on Saturday. Heavy showers are expected over multiple parts of central India till Tuesday, with thunderstorms and lightning likely over these regions till Monday.
Under the influence of the depression, very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during the weekend, over Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Odisha on Friday, and over Arunachal Pradesh from Saturday to Monday. Heavy rainfall accompanied by rainfall and thunderstorms is expected to persist over most parts of east India till Tuesday and over parts of northeast India till Wednesday, the bureau said.
A western disturbance acting as a trough lies to the northwest of the country. This, along with the shear zone, is expected to trigger very heavy rainfall over parts of Himachal Pradesh on Friday, Monday, and Tuesday and over Uttarakhand on Friday, Sunday, and Monday, the weather bureau said. Heavy showers are likely to persist over several parts of northwest India till Wednesday, the bureau said.
The absence of active weather systems over west and south peninsular India is expected to keep rainfall subdued over these regions, the weather department said. Heavy showers are expected over parts of Konkan and Goa till Saturday and over Madhya Maharashtra till Sunday, while thunderstorms and lightning are likely over Gujarat till Friday.
Heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry till Friday, the department said. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are seen over most parts of south peninsular India till Monday. Strong surface winds are expected over parts of Karnataka and Kerala till Friday, over Lakshadweep till Saturday, over Telangana till Sunday, and over Andhra Pradesh till Tuesday, the department said.
