MUMBAI – Despatches of automobiles by Indian companies locally and in overseas markets surged a little over 24% on year to 3.09 million units, data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers showed Thursday. Wholesale sales grew at a similar pace in India and in overseas markets. Led by growth in passenger cars, passenger vehicle despatches outperformed those of two-wheelers in India.

 

Overall, domestic wholesale sales in July stood at 2.41 million units, up 24% on year. Exports grew a tad faster, at 25% on year, to 677,122 units. Sensing robust demand, automakers kept the shop floors chugging as automobile production grew 25% year over year to 3.37 million units. 

 

Two-wheelers continued to form the bulk of automobiles sold in India. Companies sold 1.92 million two-wheelers to local dealerships in July, up 23% on year, and 554,258 two-wheelers to overseas dealerships, up 28%. Their production grew 24% on year to 2.72 million units.

 

In a continuing trend, scooters continued to outpace the growth of motorcycles in India. In the export market, however, the trend was the other way round. Hero MotoCorp Ltd. retained its leadership position in the two-wheeler market with a share of around 26%, closely followed by Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd., with a share of around 25%.

 

"This positive momentum, sustained over several months, has continued as the industry enters the festive season with expectations of strong consumer sentiment," SIAM's Director General Rajesh Menon said in a statement.

 

The wholesale sales of passenger vehicles in the Indian market last month grew 31% to 395,199 units and only 4% to 69,931 units in the export market. The despatches of passenger cars were stronger than those of utility vehicles in the Indian market. In the export markets, sales of passenger cars contracted while that of utility vehicles grew. Companies manufactured 505,520 cars in July, up 26% on year, indicating that they expect good demand ahead of the festival season. 

 

India's largest passenger vehicle maker Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. remained the top car seller, in terms of market share. SIAM's data calculations do not include sales of vehicles by BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar Land Rover Automotive PLC, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd., and Volvo Auto. 

 

In the three-wheeler segment, sales of goods carriers outgrew the sales of passenger carriers in July in the domestic market. Companies sold 92,560 three-wheelers to dealerships in India last month, up 33%. Overseas, sales grew 32% on year to 52,309 units--purely led by a strong growth in exports of passenger carriers.

 

Output of three-wheelers grew 30% in July to 145,913 units. Production of electric carts dipped mildly despite a strong volume offtake in the domestic market last month.  

 

 

A longer-term reading of the wholesales sales data of automobiles suggests that the momentum created by the cut in goods and services tax last year hasn't tapered off significantly, and that companies continue to benefit from a low base. In Apr-Jul, companies sold 9.53 million automobiles to local dealerships, up 22% on year, and 2.61 million units overseas, up 32%. Output of vehicles in this period grew 23% on year to 12.43 million units.
