MUMBAI – VA Tech Wabag Ltd. reported a sharp rise in its consolidated net profit for the June quarter on the back of large gains from currency depreciation and share of profits from associates and a joint venture. The top line and bottom line both rose more than what analysts had estimated.

The company's consolidated net profit for the June quarter was INR 901 million, up 37% from INR 658 million reported for the year-ago quarter. The consensus estimate for the bottom line was INR 827.25 million. The company had a foreign exchange gain of INR 368 million and an income of INR 55 million from the share of profit of associates and a joint venture.

VA Tech Wabag's revenue from operations was INR 8.87 billion, up 21% on year from INR 7.34 billion. Analysts had estimated the company's revenues at INR 8.72 billion for the June quarter. Other income rose to INR 152 million from INR 113 million a year ago.

Total expenses rose 25% on year to INR 8.26 billion. Cost of sales and service, accounting for 82% of all expenses, rose 28% to INR 6.8 billion. Its consolidated earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation rose 22% to INR 1.16 billion.

VA Tech Wabag's India segment reported revenues of INR 4.23 billion for the June quarter, marginally up on year. The company's revenues from the rest of the world were INR 4.66 billion, up 48%.

With net cash of INR 9.65 billion, the company is net cash positive for the 14th straight quarter, it said in a press release. Its order intake in Apr-Jun was INR 34 billion and the total order book was INR 194 billion excluding framework contracts.

"All clusters delivered on order intake which resulted in our order book surging to approximately INR 19,400 crores (INR 194 billion), even as we persisted with our selective approach to bidding for projects," Rajiv Mittal, chairman and managing director, said. "We forayed into Kuwait with the award of a 'Mega' SWRO (seawater reverse osmosis) project and also entered the UAE market with an order win in Ajman."

VA Tech Wabag announced its June quarter earnings after market hours. Its shares ended at INR 1,903.60 apiece on the National Stock Exchange, down more than 2% from Tuesday.  End
