MUMBAI – Indian banks are using artificial intelligence to identify vulnerable exposures and tackle them proactively, as well as for fraud risk management, State Bank of India Managing Director for retail business and operations Rama Mohan Rao Amara said Wednesday. "A lot of banks have been using and so is the case with SBI in terms of leveraging the AI for identifying vulnerable exposures," Amara said at Financial Institution Benchmarking and Calibration 2026.

"It is not like you wait for the delinquency to surface, but you have the benefit of AI, which is capable of ingesting large amounts of data, you can even consume market information, sector-specific information or any other positive or negative information that is available in the public domain, and you can generate early warning signals," he said. The largest lender in the country is also using AI for cheque processing of up to INR 10,000, Amara said.

Central Bank of India, another public sector lender, is in the early stages of using AI to achieve overall efficiency. "We are applying AI platform so that overall efficiency can be improved...That is work in progress, but it is at early stage," Central Bank of India Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Kalyan Kumar said.

Kumar said Indian banks are in different stages of using AI to curb frauds, for customer service, and better risk management. "In near future, we will be able to build all these capabilities into our working system which will certainly not only support excellent customer service, but also improve our cost of operations and also bring more operational resilience to our overall working," he said.

Central Bank of India is currently spending on building AI infrastructure, Kumar said, adding that till now, the bank has not seen significant improvement in terms of cost.

At 1130 IST, shares of SBI were trading 1.2% higher at INR 1,179 while those of Central Bank were up 0.7% at INR 31.4 on the National Stock Exchange.  End
