MUMBAI – Bata India Ltd. Tuesday reported a sharp jump in its net profit for the June quarter, aided by the revenue from operations outpacing its total expenses. The company's net profit beat the Street's estimates, but its revenue from operations missed analysts' estimates by a whisker. In the June quarter, most expenses of the company saw a slight fall compared to the year-ago quarter.
The company's net profit for the June quarter grew 23% on year to INR 637.93 million, beating analysts' expectation of INR 572.30 million. Sequentially, the net profit was up 31 times. The company's revenue from operations for the quarter rose 4% on year to INR 9.79 billion, missing the Street's estimate of INR 9.85 billion. Sequentially, revenue from operations was up 18%.
The company's total expenses for the June quarter rose 3% on year to INR 9.11 billion. The company's purchases of stock-in-trade rose 12% on year to INR 3.30 billion. The other expenses of the company were reported at INR 2.19 billion, up nearly 16% on year. The employee benefits expenses fell over 2% on year to INR 1.14 billion and the depreciation and amortisation expense fell nearly 3% on year to INR 1.03 billion in the June quarter. The company's changes in inventories of finished goods, stock-in-trade and work-in-progress were at INR 519 million in the June quarter, down 36% on year. The company's cost of raw materials and components consumed in the quarter came in at INR 613 million, down nearly 3% on year, and its finance costs came in at INR 327 million, down 6% on year.
The company paid INR 218 million in taxes for the June quarter, up 21% on year.
The company reported a foreign exchange loss of INR 27 million for the June quarter which led to a rise in the other expenses of the company. It reported a 25% on-year growth in its advertising investments in the June quarter. Bata India announced an interim dividend of INR 25 per share with a record date of Aug. 19.
"We delivered a healthy gross margin gain of 130 bps (basis points), with highest full price sale and lower markdowns," Gunjan Shah, managing director and chief executive officer of the company, said in a press release. "Growth was broad-based, with all channels contributing positively, with significant growth in e-commerce."
Shares of Bata India closed at INR 699.85 apiece on the National Stock Exchange, down nearly 2%. End
