MUMBAI – Gujarat Energy Ltd. reported strong growth in net profit for the June quarter, beating Street's estimates by a wide margin. The growth in net profit was supported by a significant rise in revenue from operations.

The company's standalone net profit for the June quarter rose 78% on year to INR 9.98 billion from INR 5.61 billion in the year-ago quarter, beating analysts' expectations of INR 7.47 billion.

Gujarat Energy's revenue from operations rose 63% on year at INR 96.70 billion during the quarter. The company's top line was largely in line with the analysts' estimates at INR 96.07 billion. The company's revenue from city gas distribution rose 90% on year to INR 77.3 billion.

The company's total expenses for the June quarter increased 61% on year to INR 85.26 billion. The increase in total expenses was largely driven by the cost of materials consumed, which increased 58% on year to INR 73.47 billion. Other expenses rose to INR 3.42 billion, up 10% on year.

The company's name was changed to Gujarat Energy Ltd. from Gujarat Gas Ltd. on May 14.
