NEW DELHI – Generic launches have sharply increased volumes in India's glucagon-like peptide-1 injectable market, but lower prices of generic versions have kept value growth more moderate, Sheetal Sapale, vice-president, commercial, Pharmatrac, said on Saturday at a webinar on the Indian pharmaceutical market's performance in July.

"The value growth will not seem very high because many of the generics were launched in the market and generics value was lesser," Sapale said. "In terms of units, we see a significant change or a significant increase."

The glucagon-like peptide-1 injectable market's value rose to INR 2.14 billion in July from INR 1.59 billion in February, while unit sales jumped to 333,000 from 127,000 over the same period, Pharmatrac data showed.

Semaglutide accounted for most of the volume expansion, with its injectable unit sales rising to 232,000 in July from 25,000 in February. Generic semaglutide injectable units rose to 192,000 in July from 40,000 in March, while innovator units increased to 41,000 from 23,000 over the same period.

MARKET EXPANSION

Sapale said the glucagon-like peptide-1 market has nevertheless expanded in value since generic launches, despite the lower pricing of generics.

"If you see where we were in 2026 Feb before the generics were launched, even in terms of value the market has moved up," Sapale said.

The overall glucagon-like peptide-1 agonist market reached a moving annual total value of INR 22.15 billion in July, nearly five times its level in January 2025, Sapale said. Tirzepatide remained the largest molecule at INR 13.98 billion, followed by semaglutide at INR 7.17 billion in July.

Within semaglutide injectables, generic brands accounted for most of the unit growth, with sales rising to 192,000 units in July from 166,000 in June. Innovator unit sales also rose to 41,000 from 36,000.

There were 33 generic semaglutide injectable brands in the market in July, of which 11 alone accounted for around 80% of generic unit sales, indicating that the volume gains are concentrated among a smaller group of brands.

The semaglutide solids segment also saw a generics-led increase, with total unit sales rising to 173,000 in July from 142,000 in June, while generic units increased to 100,000 from 70,000.  End
