MUMBAI – India's equity indices ended in the red on Tuesday as crude oil prices spiked to a one-week high, dampening sentiment even as corporate earnings and the return of foreign investors remained positive factors. Reflecting the sentiment, traders placed bearish bets in the options chain by writing at-the-money call options and buying out-of-the-money put contracts. The current-month Nifty 50 futures contract also fell sharply. Among stocks, hospital companies came under selling pressure after a parliamentary panel recommended a cap on room rent.

Notably, the gap between the closing levels of the two indices narrowed for the second straight session on Tuesday. The Nifty 50 ended at 24471.70 points, down 112.10 points or 0.5%. At the end of the continuous closing session, the Nifty 50 was at 24450.25 points, down 0.5% from Monday. During the day, the index fell as low as 24429.25 points, close to the support level of 24000 points. Broader market indices were mixed on Tuesday, with small-cap indices closing higher and mid-cap indices ending in the red. The BSE Sensex closed at 78154.25 points, down 388.18 points or 0.5%.

Traders continued to place bearish bets in the options chain of the 50-stock index on expiry day. However, the index's movement was more or less firm, with little intraday volatility. On Tuesday, traders placed the maximum additions in the 24500-call and 24450-put contracts expiring Tuesday. Meanwhile, call and put contracts with a strike price of 24500 expiring Aug. 18 saw the next highest activity. However, the bets were bearish. Traders wrote call contracts at that strike price and bought put contracts. The premiums ranged between INR 135 and 145 at 1526 IST.

Oil prices hit a one-week high of $90 a barrel on Tuesday as hopes for a peace deal between the US and Iran receded after the two countries focused on their demands rather than compromise. At 1548 IST, the near-month futures contract of Brent crude oil traded at $89.61 a barrel. Higher crude oil prices pose a particular challenge for India, as it is the world's third-largest oil importer. High prices could widen the country's import bill, push up fuel inflation, and put pressure on corporate margins. "A sharp rebound in crude prices shifted market attention back to inflation risks, tempering investor enthusiasm despite a supportive earnings backdrop," Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, said in a note.

The Index Maintenance Sub-Committee of NSE Indices Ltd. announced changes to various indices that will take effect Sept. 30. Wipro will be removed from the benchmark Nifty 50 and replaced by BSE, according to a press release issued late Monday. Wipro will subsequently be added to the Next Nifty 50 index. BSE shares ended 0.3% higher while Wipro ended 0.5% lower.

In the Nifty 100 index, five stocks will be removed and five others will be added effective Sept. 30. The stocks to be removed from the 100-stock index are Indian Hotels Co., Lodha Developers, REC, Shree Cement, and United Spirits. These shares will be replaced by BSE, Hitachi Energy India, Polycab India, Vedanta Aluminium Metal, and Vodafone India, according to the release.

Meanwhile, shares of most hospital companies fell after a parliamentary committee on health and family welfare recommended capping room rents and formulating fixed package rates for standard medical and surgical procedures across public and private healthcare institutions. Max Healthcare Institute, Yatharth Hospital & Trauma Care Services, Global Health, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise ended 2-4% lower. Fortis Healthcare and Aster DM Quality Care ended down over 1?ch.

Tata Consumer Products was the worst-performing Nifty 50 stocks, down almost 3%. The stock has declined for six consecutive weeks but has remained broadly range-bound. Analysts had said that although the company's prospects looked robust, fluctuations in tea costs may pose some earnings risk in the near term. Meanwhile, Dr. Reddy's, Eternal, and Tata Consultancy Services ended about 1-4% higher.

Godrej Properties ended over 3% lower and was the biggest drag on the Nifty 200 index. The company had posted lower-than-expected earnings for the June quarter on Monday. Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services and Vedanta followed, both falling over 3%.
