MUMBAI – Siemens Ltd.'s bottom line performance for the June quarter was supported by a one-time provisional gain from the sale of its low voltage motors, even as profitability was impacted adversely due to sharp increase in raw material and purchase of stock-in-trade costs. The top-line performance of the company was on the back of revenue growth in each of its three main segments--smart infrastructure, mobility, and digital industries.
The company's consolidated net profit for the June quarter jumped to INR 21.43 billion from INR 4.23 billion in the year-ago quarter. The increase was largely attributable to a one-time provisional gain of INR 20.99 billion from the completion of the sale of the company's low voltage motors business during the quarter. Analysts had estimated the company's June quarter consolidated net profit to be INR 3.88 billion, which had excluded the financial impact of the sale of the low voltage motors business. The consolidated net profit from continuing operations was INR 3.43 billion for the quarter.
Siemens' consolidated revenue increased 15% on year to INR 47.14 billion for the June quarter, slightly above the Street view of INR 46.19 billion.
According to the company, raw material costs rose sharply amid higher commodity prices, adversely affecting the profitability. Foreign exchange volatility also weighed down the net profit, the company said.
Siemens' consolidated top-line growth was on account of stable segmental revenue performance. The revenue of the smart infrastructure segment rose to INR 26.33 billion for the June quarter from INR 23.79 billion in the year ago quarter. The company said this segment's growth was helped by "robust growth across grid modernization projects, data centres and commercial real estate."
In the mobility segment, revenue increased to INR 9.33 billion from INR 8.27 billion. The company said this was supported by strong growth in the rolling stock business.
The digital industries segment revenue increased to INR 11.44 billion for the June quarter from INR 9.16 billion for the year-ago quarter. Sequentially, the company's consolidated revenue from operations were up only 2.1%.
Siemens' got new orders worth INR 63.28 billion in the June quarter. The order inflow was INR 54.31 billion in the year ago quarter.
The increase in June quarter order inflow on a year-on-year basis was "primarily driven by smart infrastructure business", even as domestic demand was strong on the back of ordering by both the private and public sector clients, Sunil Mathur, managing director and chief executive officer of the company, said in a earnings press release. The company's order backlog at the end of the June quarter was INR 466.70 billion, 9.6% higher than a year ago.
Siemens announced its June quarter earnings during market hours Tuesday. The shares ended at INR 4,011, up 2.5% from the closing price Monday, on the National Stock Exchange. End
