MUMBAI – Parts of Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha are expected to witness very heavy rainfall on Wednesday and till Thursday, respectively, the India Meteorological Department said. A fresh low pressure area is likely to form over the northwest Bay of Bengal Wednesday due to the influence of an upper air cyclonic circulation, causing the very heavy rainfall.

The weather systems are also likely to cause very heavy showers over most parts of east India till Monday, the department said. Thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 kilometres per hour and gusting to 70 km per hour are likely over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands till Wednesday. Moderate to severe lightning is forecast over Jharkhand till Wednesday.

Very heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya from Saturday to Monday, the weather bureau said. Heavy showers are expected to continue over several parts of northeast India till Monday while thunderstorms and lightning are also seen over some parts till Saturday.

The monsoon trough is active and lies south of its normal position. A low pressure area lies over north Madhya Pradesh while a western disturbance acting as a trough lies to the northwest of the country. The presence of these weather systems is expected to cause very heavy rainfall over parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand Friday and over east Rajasthan Wednesday, the weather department said. Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely to persist over multiple parts of northwest India till Monday, the department said.

These weather systems are also expected to trigger heavy rainfall over parts of Madhya Pradesh till Sunday and over Chhattisgarh till Friday. Thunderstorms and lightning are likely over parts of Chhattisgarh till Saturday.

The proximity to the low pressure area over north Madhya Pradesh is likely to cause very heavy showers over parts of central Maharashtra Wednesday, the weather bureau said. Heavy showers are expected over most parts of west India till Saturday, the bureau said.

The lack of active weather systems over south peninsular India is likely to keep the intensity of rainfall over the region subdued for the next few days, the weather department said. Light to moderate showers are expected over most parts of the region till Monday, the department said. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are forecast over parts of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Telangana till Friday. Strong surface winds are also seen over parts of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka till Thursday and over Telangana till Friday.  End
