MUMBAI – Intense rainfall in Delhi so far in August has made the city go past its average normal rainfall for the month in just 11 days. The capital city has received 230.5 millimetres of precipitation so far this month, surpassing the August monthly normal of 226.8 millimetres, according to private weather forecasting agency Skymet. The Safdarjung weather station in Delhi recorded 127 millimetres within the first week of the month, marking it as the city's wettest first week of August in 16 years. The intensity of rainfall, however, is expected to reduce this week, with intermittent showers likely over the next few days, the weather agency said.

The monsoon trough remains the main trigger for rainfall in Delhi during this time of the year, the weather agency said. The trough is currently running south of its normal position due to the presence of a low-pressure area over the northern parts of central Madhya Pradesh. The trough's oscillation has kept the wind pattern over Delhi variable and disturbed. The low-pressure area will move westward and is likely to move over west Madhya Pradesh. As such, the trough will be positioned to the south of Delhi, but remain in proximity.

With the proximity of the trough to Delhi, light rainfall is expected over and around Delhi this week, the weather agency said. Showers will occur intermittently for the rest of the week, with no heavy showers or thundershowers expected, the agency said.  End
