MUMBAI – Higher average revenue per user led by customer migration to higher-generation networks, coupled with a one-time income, helped Vodafone Idea Ltd. narrow its net loss both sequentially and on year for the June quarter. Even after adjusting for the one-time income, the company's net loss is lower than the loss reported for the trailing and the year-ago quarters.

The debt-laden telecommunications company reported a consolidated net loss of INR 37.54 billion for the June quarter, compared to the adjusted consolidated net loss of around INR 55 billion for the trailing quarter and consolidated net loss of INR 66.08 billion for the corresponding quarter a year ago. This was also lower than the INR 54.06 billion net loss for the June quarter expected by the Street.

The company's net loss for the reporting quarter included a one-time income of INR 16.11 billion. This included a one-time gain of INR 18.16 billion from the remeasurement of settlement assets from the promoters of the erstwhile Vodafone India Ltd. and a one-time cost of INR 2.05 billion relating to demands from the Department of Telecommunications.

The company's consolidated revenues for the June quarter grew over 3% sequentially and 6% on year to INR 116.89 billion, beating analysts' expectation of INR 114.64 billion. This marked the fastest sequential growth in the company's top line in seven quarters. The company's other income for the quarter jumped almost 88% sequentially to INR 1.95 billion.

Vodafone Idea's customer average revenue per user for the reporting quarter, excluding machine-to-machine services, rose nearly 3% sequentially and over 10% on year to INR 195. The on-year growth in average revenue per user was the highest in the industry and was primarily supported by customer upgrades, the company said in a post-earnings press release. The company's blended average revenue per user for the quarter rose nearly 2% sequentially and more than 7% on year to INR 177.

The company's consolidated earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation for the June quarter increased 3% sequentially and 9% on year to INR 50.34 billion. This was also better than the INR 49.34 billion estimated by the Street. Its consolidated EBITDA margin remained flat sequentially at 43.1%, but improved 130 basis points from 41.8% reported in the year-ago.

The company added 300,000 subscribers in the June quarter, taking its total customer base to 193.10 million. This marked the first quarter of net subscriber addition for the company since it was formed by the merger of Vodafone India and Idea Cellular Ltd. Its blended churn rate for the June quarter decreased to 3.8% from 3.9% in the trailing quarter.

Of the total customers, 67% are fourth-generation and fifth-generation network customers, Vodafone Idea said. The company added 1.20 million 4G and 5G network customers in the June quarter, taking the total base to 130.1 million subscribers. Data usage during the quarter rose to 88.4 petabytes per day from 69.1 petabytes per day a year ago.

With the company's planned investments, it expects its 4G network population coverage in 17 circles to cross 95% from the current 87%. "Alongside 5G rollout, we continue to invest in expanding our high-speed broadband network by adding new 4G sites and upgrading our core and transmission network for high speed broadband network," Vodafone Idea said. The company added over 2,800 unique broadband towers during the quarter, taking the total unique broadband towers count to 204,893.

The company's capital expenditure in the June quarter was INR 19.30 billion. As of Jun. 30, its debt from banks was INR 2.11 billion, down from INR 7.26 billion as of Mar. 31. Its cash and bank balance was INR 65.58 billion, up from INR 37.15 billion as of Mar. 31. Cash and bank balance for the quarter was supported by receipt of part proceeds from warrant issuance during the quarter, Vodafone Idea said.

Vodafone Idea has secured funding of INR 64 billion, including warrants and fund and non-fund-based facilities, it said, adding that it remains engaged with lenders to close the overall funding plan. The company has already spent INR 90 billion out of the three-year capital expenditure guidance of INR 450 billion.

The company's total expenses for the June quarter grew nearly 2% sequentially but fell 3% on year to INR 172.42 billion. The company's biggest expense, depreciation and amortisation, declined nearly 1% sequentially to INR 54.67 billion. Its finance costs, on the other hand, rose nearly 3% sequentially to INR 51.20 billion. Among other expenses, network costs and information technology outsourcing expenses for the quarter declined slightly on quarter to INR 23.44 billion from INR 23.45 billion in the trailing quarter.

Vodafone Idea reported its June quarter earnings after market hours Monday. Its shares ended at INR 12.92 per share on the National Stock Exchange, up 1.5% from Friday.  End
