Govt rules out ethanol blending in diesel, not mixing isobutanol currently

NEW DELHI – The government has ruled out ethanol blending in diesel after tests conducted by oil marketing companies found that adding ethanol drastically reduced diesel's flash point, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi said in the Rajya Sabha. After successfully blending ethanol with petrol, the government has been considering expanding ethanol blending to other fuels such as diesel.
Amid the technical infeasibility of ethanol blending in diesel, the government has been testing isobutanol blending with the fuel. Asked if the government is exploring isobutanol blending with diesel, Gopi said it is "presently not blended with diesel", without detailing the proposals or tests undertaken for isobutanol.
On biofuel blending in petrol, Gopi said the government has so far not decided to increase ethanol blending beyond 20%. "Any future decision regarding higher ethanol blends will be taken only after detailed scientific and technical studies and consultations with all relevant stakeholders, including automobile manufacturers, oil marketing companies and research institutions," Gopi sain in reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha.
