NEW DELHI/KOLKATA – Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd. is working on a robust strategy to build its sports portfolio, a senior company official told analysts in a post-quarter conference call. The company will be "very prudent" in its approach on the sports business, as per the official.

"We will ensure that eventually this business will be profitable on a sustained basis for us...," the company official said. "We are working on creating a domestic calendar as well, in terms of how we can have a robust sports strategy going forward."

The company, in June, partnered with the Federation Internationale de Football Association to stream 39 global football events in India till 2034. "This made the company emerge as one of the most powerful sports destinations for the youth," the official said. "This year, despite the odd hours of FIFA matches in India, around 83% of the overall FIFA viewership was live on Zee5, and total reach exceeded 400 million across all platforms."

For the June quarter, the company's domestic advertising revenue declined 11% on year owing to uncertainties stemming from the war in West Asia. "The West Asia, the war situation and those things are little bit creating uncertainties for us," the official said. "But we are confident that given the fact that our market share has improved significantly and the festive season (is) approaching us, we should be able to leverage that to our benefit."

The company is looking to raise advertisement revenue from the broadcast of Bundesliga, the German football league, as per the official. The company's revenue from the subscription business grew 16% on year in the June quarter, primarily driven by higher average revenue per user, an increase in subscribers for its digital business, and an increase in pricing in its linear business, the official said.

For its linear digital subscription, the company will be looking at raising prices in February. "In terms of price hikes on the linear side, as you know that we are regulated by NTO (new tariff order under the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India). And as and when the next NTO (new tariff order) cycle happens, which is in February next year, we will be looking at price hikes there as well. It has been a fairly long wait for us to get clarity on the major business," the official said.

The company is also in talks with several business-to-business companies, as per the official. Going ahead, it expects the September quarter to be better than the June quarter for advertisement and subscription revenues, the official said.

For the June quarter, Zee Entertainment Enterprises reported a consolidated net profit of INR 763 million on revenues of INR 19.07 billion. Monday, its shares closed at INR 94.42 on the National Stock Exchange, up slightly from Friday's close.  End
