NEW DELHI – Info Edge (India) Ltd. is likely to find it difficult to improve margins until the top line grows in the teens, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Hitesh Oberoi told analysts in a post-earnings conference call Monday. The question emerged as Info Edge has begun to see results from its new offerings, some of which were in the works for about half a decade. At the same time, the company maintained that it does not want to slow down on investments in the domain of artificial intelligence.
On a related note, among what is seen as one of the traditional margin levers, Info Edge does not plan to add to its overall headcount in the short term. "But if our business continues to grow at 15%, 17% per annum, then I think over time we'll start adding people once again...we may take a break for a quarter or two, but after a while, we'll start adding people again," Oberoi said.
For the June quarter, the consumer internet company reported a net profit of INR 2.46 billion, down down 21% sequentially. Its revenue from operations increased a little over 2% on quarter to INR 8.24 billion for the three months. Segment-wise, revenue from the recruitment solutions business increased 5% on quarter to INR 6.12 billion. Contribution from its real estate business, 99acres, declined almost 10% to INR 1.30 billion, and that from other businesses rose 3.5% to INR 829.12 million.
Among the categories in the 'other businesses' segment, Jeevansathi was profitabe in the June quarter, while Shiksha remained under pressure, according to the company. In the recruitment solutions business, which accounts for a brute majority of the company's overall top line, a third of the revenue growth emerged from higher enterprise contract renewals and better volumes in certain categories. Among the remaining, a third each came from price increase and new offerings such as AI-REX and Talent Pulse.
Property platform 99acres moved closer to breaking even in the June quarter, as per the company. In the trailing quarter, this segment incurred a loss of INR 170 million, which fell to INR 20 million in the June quarter. "So, last quarter, profit number was INR 3 crores (INR 30 million) and there was an accounting adjustment of INR 20 crores (INR 200 million). If you take that out, the losses were actually INR 17 crores (INR 170 million)...So, last quarter, business delivered INR 17 crores loss. That sequentially became minus INR 2 crores (INR 20 million) this quarter," a company executive explained.
The company's focus in the real estate business is to build strong presence in the secondary market, which brings online traffic that can be monetised in several ways. In the primary market, which ropes in 45-47% of revenue in the business, the company's focus is geared towards channel partners. "We don't do very well with builders right now. So, but the trend is that more and more business nationally is moving towards channel partners, and channel partners will grow stronger over time, and that works for us as well," Oberoi said.
The company plans to expand the new offering 99 shorts to more cities. Info Edge invested in the property business through 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) to convert a strong competitive position into clear market leadership and much of that investment phase is behind the company, as per Oberoi. "...the business is beginning to demonstrate meaningful operating leverage. With leadership established across traffic supply and customer engagement, significant headroom for monetisation, and disciplined marketing investment, we believe 99acres is well positioned to sustain healthy growth...," he said.
RECRUITMENT SOLUTIONS
Even though NaukriGulf grew 12% year-on-year in the June quarter while remaining highly profitable, the company ruled out any further international expansion for now. For Job Hai, which continued to register traction in the reporting quarter, Oberoi said the company would like to more than double the revenue this year and targets to take the offering to 18 cities over the next few months. Encouraged by the early traction, Info Edge also plans to scale up AI-REX and Talent Pulse to several thousand more customers over the next few quarters, as per the chief executive.
Among the hiring segments, Info Edge said volumes are under pressure in the mid-market segment, where the company claims to a be a clear leader. Meanwhile, premium hiring again continues to grow at a rapid clip. However, in terms of volumes, premium hiring comprises a small fraction of the overall hiring that takes place through Naukri. "And that's where the market also seems to be moving to. So we are confident. And we are not monetising all our assets, you know, very aggressively right now. So a lot of the stuff we sell for free," Oberoi said.
Info Edge is also experimenting with short-form upskilling courses at lower price points, wherein the acquired edtech platform Coding Ninjas is expected to help, Oberoi said.
Monday, shares of Info Edge closed at INR 1,282 on the National Stock Exchange, up 4.6% from Friday. End
