MUMBAI – Zee Entertainment Ltd. generated a net profit of INR 763 million for the June quarter, down 47% from INR 1.44 billion in the year-ago quarter, though it exceeded analysts' expectations of INR 363.60 million by a wide margin.

The company's revenue from operations rose over 4% to INR 19.07 billion from INR 18.25 billion reported in the year-ago quarter. However, it missed analysts' expectations of INR 19.35 billion. The company's other income rose nearly 25% on year to INR 312 million. The company reported total income of INR 19.39 billion, up 5% on year.

Total expenses were at INR 18.64 billion during the June quarter, up 13% on year. Sequentially, however, total expenses fell almost 20%. The company reported earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation of INR 789 million, down 65% on year. The EBITDA margin contracted to 4.1% from 12.5% in the year-ago quarter.

The company's revenue from advertisement fell 11% on year to INR 6.71 billion due to an increase in spending by the company during major cricket tournaments and advertisers holding back budgets because of the war in West Asia. The company's advertising revenue recovered in June with the acquisition of broadcast rights for India for major world football competitions held by the Federation Internationale de Football Association, popularly known as FIFA.

Sales from subscription rose 16% on year to INR 11.37 billion due to increased average revenue per user, growth in digital subscribers, and higher subscription fees. Revenue from other sales and services rose 17% on year to INR 990 million due to growth in studio business driven by other language films.

Zee Entertainment is investing heavily in advertising and promotion, along with the launch of new sports channels. The company generated significant revenue from international market across three operational channels, including INR 460 million from advertising, INR 1.04 billion through subscriptions, and producing INR 155 million from other sales and services. Zee Entertainment had also launched 38 television series and films, including 15 original titles, were released during the June quarter.

Zee Entertainment announced its June quarter earnings after market hours. On Monday, shares of the company closed slightly higher at INR 94.45 apiece on the National Stock Exchange.  End
