MUMBAI – The concentration of several weather systems over the northern half of the country is likely to restrict intense rainfall only over parts of northwest, east, and northeast India in the next five days, the India Meteorological Department said. Most parts of central, west, and south peninsular India are likely to receive moderate showers during the same period, the weather department said.

A low pressure area lies over north Madhya Pradesh, while a cyclonic circulation associated with it tilts southwards. A shear zone runs across the central and adjoining north peninsular India, and a western disturbance acting as a trough lies to the northwest of the country. An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over southeast Himachal Pradesh. Another upper air cyclonic circulation lies over northwest Bay of Bengal, and under its influence, a low pressure area is expected to form over the same region around Wednesday.

The presence of these systems is likely to cause very heavy rainfall over parts of east Rajasthan Tuesday and over Himachal Pradesh till Tuesday, the weather bureau said. Heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning are likely over several parts of northwest India till Sunday. 

Very heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Odisha from Wednesday to Saturday, and over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya during the weekend, the bureau said. Heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is likely over multiple parts of east India till Sunday. Many parts of northeast India will experience thunderstorms and lightning along with heavy showers during the same period. Moderate to intense lightning is expected over Bihar till Wednesday and over Jharkhand till Tuesday.

In central India, heavy showers are forecast over parts of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh till Saturday, the weather department said. Thunderstorms and lightning are seen over parts of Chhattisgarh till Friday. In west India, heavy rainfall is expected over parts of the Gujarat region, Konkan, and Goa on Tuesday and over central Maharashtra till Wednesday. Thunderstorms and lightning are likely over the Gujarat region till Wednesday and Saurashtra and Kutch till Tuesday. Light to moderate showers are likely to persist over most parts of both central and west India till Sunday, the department said.

Strong surface winds are likely over parts of Karnataka, Kerala, and Lakshadweep till Tuesday, Telangana till Wednesday, and Andhra Pradesh till Friday, the weather bureau said. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are seen over the eastern parts of the peninsula till Friday, and over the western parts till Wednesday, the bureau said, while scattered rainfall is likely to continue over most parts of south peninsular India till Sunday.  End
