MUMBAI – Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Ltd.'s net loss for the June quarter widened from the year-ago quarter as growth in total expenses outpaced the growth in its total sales. However, the company's net loss was far below the analyst estimates. The revenue from operations was nearly in line with the Street's expectation.
The company's net loss for the June quarter widened to INR 2.15 billion from INR 2.12 billion in the year-ago quarter. Analysts had estimated the company's net loss at INR 2.51 billion for the quarter. The company's consolidated revenue from operations for the quarter rose nearly 11% to INR 20.26 billion from INR 18.31 billion in the year-ago quarter. Analysts had estimated the company's revenue from operations at INR 20.45 billion. The company's other income fell 12% on year to INR 560 million in the June quarter.
The company's total expenses for the June quarter rose over 11% on year to INR 23.95 billion. The company's purchase of stock-in-trade rose 36% on year to INR 6.15 billion and the other expenses rose 7% on year to INR 6.21 billion. The company's depreciation and amortisation expenses were reported at INR 3.50 billion, up 11% on year and the employee benefit expenses rose 14% on year to INR 3.46 billion. The finance cost of the company came in at INR 1.37 billion, up 21% on year, and the rent expenses were INR 623 million, up 12% on year. The cost of materials consumed was INR 1.73 billion, down 17% on year, and the changes in inventories of finished goods, work-in-progress, and stock-in-trade was reported at INR 908 million, down 25% on year.
The rise in the total expenses of the company was majorly aided by the rise in its purchase of stock-in-trade. Aditya Birla Fashion's net tax benefit for the June quarter was reported at INR 715 million from a net tax benefit of INR 257 million in the year-ago quarter.
Aditya Birla Fashion reported its consolidated earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation at INR 1.67 billion, down 2% on year from INR 1.69 billion. The company reported a lower EBITDA in the quarter due to lower other income and scale up in OWND brand and Galeries Lafayette, the department store chain. The company's EBITDA margin was 8.2% in the June quarter down from 9.3% in the year-ago quarter. The company reported its earnings before interest and tax loss at INR INR 1.83 billion down from loss of INR 1.46 billion in the year-ago quarter.
The company's Pantaloon segment reported a revenue of INR 12 billion for the June quarter, up 10% on year and the ethnic businesses segment reported a revenue of INR 4.54 billion, up 4% on year. TMRW segment's revenue was up 11% on year to INR 2.20 billion and the other segments of the company reported a revenue of INR 1.57 billion, up 30% on year.
The company's OWND brand grew 55% in the June quarter led by store additions. The company's footprint increased to 7.9 million square feet in the June quarter from 7.4 million square feet in the year-ago quarter.
Friday, shares of Aditya Birla Fashion ended marginally up at INR 63.33 apiece on the National Stock Exchange. The company's detailed its June quarter earnings on Saturday. End
